Guatemala Independence Day 2020 – Today’s Doodle honors Guatemala’s Independence Day, a national holiday marked by celebration across this mountainous Central American country. On this day in 1821 in Guatemala City, the nation–along with four others–declared its sovereignty from Spain with the Act of Independence of Central America.
Much like the Mayan civilization that existed many centuries ago in present-day Guatemala, the country today maintains a special reverence for its national bird, the resplendent quetzal. The Mayans used the birds’ feathers as currency, and while those feathers have since been replaced by bills and coins, the Quetzal is the official name of the Guatemalan currency today. Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the nation’s blue-and-white-striped flag with the iconic resplendent quetzal depicted at its center, perched atop a scroll that displays the date of the country’s independence.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia, Guatemala!
