Bolivia Independence Day 2020 – Today’s Doodle celebrates Bolivia’s National Day, known locally as Día de la Patria. On this day in 1825, Bolivia–known then as Upper Peru–signed its Declaration of Independence and officially became a sovereign nation.
In celebration of Bolivia’s rich history, many eat classic local dishes like chorizo or fried bread, while others honor Bolivian culture by dressing in the bowler hats and handwoven clothing of the country’s indigenous population, the Aymara.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the tri-color Bolivian flag, which features three horizontal bands of red, yellow, and green and the Bolivian coat of arms at its center. Perched atop the cartouche in the coat of arms is the emblematic national bird, the Andean condor. With a massive wingspan that can reach more than ten feet, the bird is among the largest flying creatures in the world. Below it sits a stylized version of Mount Potosi with another of Bolivia’s iconic national animals, the llama, at its base.
¡Feliz Día de la Patria, Bolivia!
